Situated in east Asia, bordered by North Korea, Russia and Vietnam, China has billion people comprising 56 nationalities including Han (92%), Uygur, Hui, Yi, Tibetan, Miao, Manchu, Mongol, Buyi, Korean and others. Seventy percent live in the rural areas lending a unique character to each province. Languages and dialects in China include Mandarin (Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect), Yue (Cantonese), Wu (Shanghaiese), Minbei (Fuzhou), Minnan (Hokkien-Taiwanese), Xiang, Gan, Hakka dialects, and others. China's religious groups include Tao, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and atheist.
