This is a photo (taken about 1881) is Marshal
James W. Cart with his 2 nieces, Lillie Maude McConnell on his right and
Emma Jane McConnell on his left. James was Rico's first elected Marshall.
His widowed sister, Fannie Cart McConnell (my great-grandmother) along
with her 2 children, came to Rico in 1879 to keep house for her brother.

| This photo (taken about 1895) is Samuel H.
Burghardt (my great-grandfather) who married the widow Fannie Cart
McConnell in Rico in 1881. Sam came to Central City, Colorado in the early
1860's perhaps as early as 1859. In 1864 he enlisted in the 100 day
Regiment of the Colorado 3rd Cavalry which was involved in the famous
"Sand Creek Massacre". Sam was wounded during this battle. On March 1,
1881, Sam was appointed by Gov. Pitkin to be one of the County
Commissioners for the newly formed Colorado county of Dolores. Sam came to
Rico in 1879.

This photo (taken about 1895) is Fannie Cart
Burghardt (my great-grandmother). Fannie and Sam had 5 children born in
Rico. Fannie died in 1900 and is buried at the Rico Cemetery. Two of her
infant children, Ida Mae and Fannie Louise lie next to her in the cemetery
(they died 1 day apart in 1890)

| This photo (taken about 1895 is Minnie Estella
Burghardt (my grandmother), daughter of Samuel and Fannie. She was born in
Rico 15 Jan 1882 and lived there until her mother died in 1900. At that
time, her father sent her to live with her aunt Margaret in Durango as he
felt Rico was a little too rough of a town for a young lady without a
mother.

| This is the wedding photo (taken Apr 1896) of
Lillie Maude McConnell (daughter of Fannie Cart McConnell Burghardt). The
wedding took place in Rico (data from the marriage certificate can be
found on the "Marriages" page) 16 Apr 1896. Robert and Maude had three
children born in Rico, unfortunately one was stillborn, one lived 3 months
and one lived 5 years. They are buried at the Rico Cemetery along with
their father. Robert Heyer was a conductor on the Rio Grande Southern

L. Burghardt (son of Samuel and Fannie Burghardt). Leland was born in Rico
on 6 Mar 1894 and was sent to live with his half sister, Emma Jane

George N. Law. George was the U.S. Deputy Mineral Surveyor in Rico at the
time. The wedding took place in Rico, 15 Mar 1893 (data from the marriage
