I am
searching for information regarding MARIONs in the 1880 Elbert County census.
They are: Lara, age 47, housekeeper; Charles, 18, laborer; and children,
Abram, age 16; Carrie, age 14; Sanford, age 12; Emma G., age 9; and Ida, age 7.
I believe these may be orphaned children of Charles and Hannah MARION who were
in the 1870 Douglas County census, and Lara may be their aunt.

L. Dietemann August 12, 2002
My name is John L. DIETEMANN the Grandson of John 'Shawnee'
DIETEMANN a pioneer
in a part of Elbert County history. I find recollections of the 'HUNGATE
Massacre' of 1864 but very little information on the 'DIETEMANN' Massacre of
1868. A memorial to these two incidents is located on the Courthouse lawn in
Kiowa. Are there any old timers in Kiowa who have historical documents relative
to these tragedies?
Is there documented evidence that during the Smoky
Hill Trail and Pony Express days that Kiowa was a transfer point or watering
station?
In yester years there was a settlement, town or village by the
name of Hargisville which was located East of Commanche Creek near the Old Albus
Ranch. Is there any documented evidence of this?
Thank you

HOWARD, David & HOWARD, William (brothers)
ca.1885
Looking for information on HOWARD brothers, cattlemen, with listed
address in Clemmons.
Of interest is that the two HOWARD brothers (David & William) who I am researching were cattlemen starting in 1863. They applied for a brand in 1885. The address that they gave was "Clemmons". In researching the Colorado archives, I was excited to find Clemmons in Elbert County on the 1895 map. I am attaching a link to the archives map page which shows Clemmons in the Northwestern corner of the county.
http://www.livgenmi.com/elbertCO.htm
The brother's homestead papers, dated 1888 for section 34 of Arapahoe County, on the Box Elder Creek would place them just across the County line from Clemmons.
Many thanks for your response and assistance.
Webmaster's note: According to Colorado Places, Clemmons was established from 23 Oct 1882 through 31 Oct 1898 then reestablished as Schley from 27 Jun 1899 through 15 Oct 1913.

I'm working on my grandmother's tree. The WHITEAKER surname is
her family and Helen WHITEAKER was born in Kutch in 1911. They
homesteaded around Simla just before 1909 with the help of Roy PAYTON,
Helen's Uncle. He was elected to go to Denver from Pueblo.
Anything would be helpful.

Niona
(Mundy) Case January 21, 2002
Finally getting around to researching the "home folks" early days in
Elbert County. My grandfather and grandmother moved to Colorado in 1903. My
grandfather had worked for a farmer near Eastonville until he saved enough to
return to his home state of Illinois, at Mt. Carmel, and marry his high-school
sweetheart and bring her back to Colorado. They first lived in tenant housing
on the farm where grandfather MUNDY had been working. There their first
three children, Ray, Fay and Van, were born.
By 1912, they had thriftily saved enough to purchase land in Elbert County, actually "straddling" the Douglas/Elbert county line. Uncle Hugh came along in 1912. I've found extensive pedigrees for both my grandmother and grandfather from Illinois back to New York and New Jersey. But have no supporting genealogy "proofs" to back up the relationship here in Colorado.
Was unable to locate a copy of a marriage license from Mt. Carmel, IL. My grandfather was Clarence Verner, aka Vernor Clarence, aka C.V. or Vern MUNDY. My grandmother was Gertrude "Gertie" Asenith NEWKIRK. They were married in IL on 7 Jan 1903, and came right back to Colorado, to the Eastonville farm where Grandad had been working since about 1900, apparently.
I still have "MUNDY's" living in Elbert County; my cousin farms his grandfather's place on the Elbert County line; and his mother still manages their farm just south of Elbert. All of C.V. MUNDY's children are deceased. My dad was the eldest, William Ray, and he died in 1987. If any of you good folk have stories of those early days when the MUNDY's lived in your area, I'd love to hear them. They weren't exactly very gregarious in sharing family history! Both Gertrude and Vern MUNDY are buried at the Elbert/Kiowa cemetery. My daughter and I visited it this fall, and I found many more "neighbors" I knew "back when" there than are walking the streets today!
