LIBERTY ISLAND


until 1956 it was Bedloe's Island. Located off of the southern tip of Manhattan Island, in New York, New York, in the upper New York Bay. The area is about twelve acres.

French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi enlightened the world with the Statue of Liberty on this island.

Liberty Island and nearby Ellis Island constitues the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The monument is within New Jersey waters, Liberty Island and a portion of Ellis Island are within the territorial jurisdiction of New York state.

The Statue of Liberty was declared a national monument in 1924; in 1933 the National Park Service gained jurisdiction over the monument and over the entire island when Fort wood was decomissioned in 1937.
