San Juan County was formed in 1876 from LaPlata County. Spanish explorers named the river and mountains in the area San Juan and the name was also given to the county when it was formed. Silverton is the only town. San Juan County is bordered by Ouray County, Hinsdale County, LaPlata County, Montezuma County, Dolores County and San Miguel County.
