Restoring Family Photographs

Paul Ternlund

As genealogists we enjoy photos of yesteryear -- especially when they are photos of our own relatives. Often these photo prints have not had the best care over the years. But we are very grateful to have them in any condition! While the old saying “you can’t get blood from a stone” still stands, today’s digital photo editors can perform wonders to render aged, discolored, torn, and soiled digital images back to a healthier state. An image file (the modern day equivalent of a photo negative) will not deteriorate with time as their analog predecessors did. Image files can be printed any time in the future and often can be included in your family tree database

Paul will work with Adobe’s flagship software, Photoshop and demonstrate some of its restorative capabilities. Using old photos from fellow SGSC members, he will share “before” and “after” family photos. He will demonstrate various Photoshop tools to make these improvements

Paul Ternlund, is a retired Electrical Engineer and Senior Computer Scientist. He worked for the Department of Defense for 36 years. Now he has more time to enjoy digital photography and photo editing. Paul has taught classes and given presentations on both subjects at the Aurora Senior Center, the Denver Digital Photo Club, and at his church.
