The Swedish Genealogical Society of Colorado (SGSC) was organized in April of 2007. Since that day we have grown to over 80 members. This enthusiastic group meets monthly at the Denver Public Library at 14th and Broadway and welcomes interested family historians and new members.
Charles Berberich Ph.D.
Genealogists continually encounter new places that figured in the lives of ancestors. Studies become much richer and more interesting if we know more about where individuals lived and worked, their land holding arrangements and crops, the roads and markets they used. The rewards are immense if we can see the arrangement of houses in a village, the layout of a harbor, or the plan of a town before we make the long-awaited trip to the Old Country. Our November presentation will focus on Lantmäteriet, the Swedish National Survey, its immense collection of modern and historical maps and property documents on the Web, and how to order maps useful for genealogy, with a quick look at useful tools for place-name studies.
Dr Berberich has created a page on his web site that has all of the links to the sources used for this talk, as well as the presentation itself. Your are encouraged to view this work and to link to the pages: Swedish Historical Geography: Lantmäteriet and Other Reserouces on the Web.
Charles Berberich, Ph.D is a member of the Swedish Genealogical Society of Colorado. After conducting dozens of oral tradition interviews in West Africa and extensive archival research in Europe, Charles taught History for 15 years at major American universities, specializing in African, and Medieval and Early Modern European History. His career in Colorado included international relations for the Solar Energy Research Institute (now NREL), consulting, directing Web development for a large non-profit organization, and indexing academic books. Charles resumed his genealogical research upon retirement, concentrating on German ancestors (back to the late 1500's) until switching focus a few years ago to his Swedish heritage. He is a map collector, a historical geographer, and croquet enthusiast. He and his wife, Marilyn Munsterman, spend two to three months each summer at their home in Southwest France.
