The Swedish Genealogical Society of Colorado (SGSC) was organized in April of 2007. Since that day we have grown to over 80 members. This enthusiastic group meets monthly at the Denver Public Library at 14th and Broadway and welcomes interested family historians and new members.
Roland Nilsson
ROLAND NILSSON, a leading advocate for the Swedish community in Colorado, will present a program describing the history of prominent SWEDES IN COLORADO. Roland will introduce us to an impressive array of politicians, doctors, educators, as well as miners, contractors, shopkeepers, and restaurateurs, all who have influenced our local history.
A founding member of SGSC, Roland Nilsson was born in Stockholm in 1934. In 1973, he was transferred to the United States by his employer, Atlas Copco. He designed and serviced mining and construction equipment for the company until their closure in 1990. For the next ten years, Roland headed an independent engineering company, where he designed equipment for the environmental clean-up in addition to mining and construction.
Roland and his wife have lived in Lakewood since 1980. From 1985 to 1992, the couple operated The Place, a popular restaurant in Georgetown, Colorado. Now that Roland has "retired," he works as a courier three days a week.
Roland's contributions to the Swedish community are too numerous to list, but include board participation in VASA Order of America, the Swedish Club of Denver, and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Since 1983, Roland has been responsible for organizing and chairing the highly successful, annual Scandinavian Ball. For the last eight years, Roland has spearheaded the Swedish Candle Light Service at Ryssby Church; this very popular event has helped to raise funds for restoration of the church and grounds every year since. In addition, Roland has founded the Swedish Historical Society of Colorado and the Swedish Alliance of Colorado.
NOTE: We will not be meeting at the Denver Public Library this month. Please park behind the church and enter through the back doors. Once inside, veer off to the left and the room will be on your left side.
