d. 5 MAR 1890 in British Hollow, Wisconsin, Usa

father: Trappen, Mathias(~1784 - 1850)
mother: Retz, Anna Magdalena(~1790 - )
*On Catharina's headstone, her age, and the spelling of her first name are inconsistent with the records. According to her birth record, she would have been almost 61 years old at the time of her death, and her parents named her 'Catharina', not 'Katherina'. *There are numerous mistakes on her death record also - she is shown as 88 years old (she was just shy of 61), her father's name is shown as "Tropper" (Trappen) and her year of birth is shown as 1832 (she was born in 1829). *This epitaph is written (in German) on Catharina's headstone-it translates to read : "One less in our homeland The family ring is broken and the dear face is missed day by day from it's place but purified, saved by Divine Grace there is one more in heaven."

*Albert was the last survivor of Tom + Kates children. *After "Lottie died, apparently married a second time to a woman named "Esther", she is said to have left him and took a lot of his wealth with her. NOTE: Albert is listed in the obituary of Charles Vogelsberg in Feb 1935, attending the funeral with his wife. That would have been Esther. *Had a nervous 'twitch' in one eye. *Albert is shown as a travelling liquor salesman (probably wholesale) in the census of 1900. *Albert was the owner of the tavern on Eighth St. between Central Avenue and Iowa Street in Dubuque, previously owned by his older brother, Peter. I remember as children, Bud and I would visit "Uncle Al" at the tavern. I remember him being rather unfriendly to us, as children. *Lived at 1545 Montrose Terrace in Dubuque until his death in 1955 *Apparently died on the anniversary of his wedding to his first wife, Louisa.

The name(s) of the father(s) is unknown and it is thought that the children were placed for adoption. *Anna may have lived in Milwaukee for awhile. It is not yet known where she is buried. No marriage or death records for her could be found. *She is shown as a 53-year-old "laundress" in a private home in Lancaster, Wisconsin in the sensus of 1910. She is listed as single but shows 'Number of years of present marriage' as 2 years (?).

* "Charles along with his second wife (?) were the last Vogelsbergs to own the Hotel in Potosi." * It was said that Charles had married twice, but this could not be confirmed. *Charles (nickname "Snig") and his brother Grover were teamates on the Potosi baseball team. *Died at about 44 years of age. * 26 June 1992 - I Visited with Joe Dosier, 94 years old, of Potosi, Wisc. According to Joe - Charles was married only once! * From "Breckmann Family Tree" - "Grover and Charles played in a band around the Rockville-Potosi area." * From obit (Grant County Herald) - Married in Detroit, Michigan (?) His wife was still living at the time so assuming she was the informant, obit is probably correct. * Served two years with the 42nd U.S. Engineers (during WWI)

b. ABT 15 NOV 1866 in British Hollow, Wisconsin, Usa
d. 23 MAY 1911 in 2522 Jackson St., Dubuque, Iowa, Usa

*The stone schoolhouse where "Effie" attended grammar school is still standing (1991) and in good condition. At this time it is being used as a residence. *The church, St Andreus (St. Andrew's) where Effie and Peter were married is also still standing and also in good condition. *Effie's grave in Mt. Calvary Cemetary had no headstone until 1986 when her grandchildren (Esther's children) had a marker made to match her husband, Peter's. The stone also included the name and dates for her daughter, Bernice. Unfortunately, after the stone was made and set, it was learned that Bernice had died in 1910 not 1911 - the stone will have to be changed! *The only record of Effie's second name was found written in a family bible by George L. Mac Farlane (her son-in-law) as "Eva Marie (Mary) Vogelsberg". When signing her own name, she used "Effie". (shown in the back of a book she once owned, now in the possession of her granddaughter, Joyce Howard). *Effie's birth date is not confirmed. It is shown in that same bible as 15 November 1865, and is shown on one census report as November 1867. Other census reports show her being born in 1866, and her death record shows September 1966. (The informant on Effie's death record was her brother, Peter, who didn't even know his own mother's maiden name) * The area of Wisconsin where "Effie" was born and married consists of 3 settlements, British Hollow, Dutch Hollow (now Tennyson) and Potosi. Peter and Effie's marriage record shows that they were married in Potosi, and that Effie was born in Potosi, but the church, St. Andreus (Andrews), where they were married is actually located in what is now Tennyson and Effie was actually born in British Hollow. * All that is left of British Hollow now (1991) are the foundations of a couple of old buildings. *The only record of Effie's second name was found written in a family bible by George L. Mac Farlane (her son-in-law) as "Eva Marie (Mary) Vogelsberg". When signing her own name, she used "Effie". (shown in the back of a book now in the possession of her granddaughter, Joyce Howard). George was obviously uncertain. *Effie is shown as "Effa" in the census of 1870--census-taker probably misunderstood the German accent. In the census of 1910 she is shown as "Emma"living with her 5 children at 2522 Jackson St. (now 2500). * Effie and Louisa were not shown in the British Hollow census for 1880 as they were working as "domestics" for H. L. Stout, a wealthy lumber dealer in Dubuque, and were living in his mansion. They are shown in the census for Dubuque for that year. * Effie died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

*With a partner, Henry Macke ran a brewery in British Hollow, Wisconsin. *From Grant County Herald - 11 April 1934 "Potosi Events - Another old resident passes - This community was cast in a gloom of sorrow when it became known that Joseph Vogelsberg had passed to the Great Beyond at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Thursday night, following a brief attack of cancer of the bowels. His condition became serious Thursday morning and he was rushed to the hospital, but there it was soon discovered that no hope for relief was possible for him and he died at 10 o'clock that night. Joe Vogelsberg was born in the village of British Hollow in the town of Potosi, Nov 24, 1852 (1853?) and had almost continually made the old home town his home. For some time he was manager of the British Hollow Brewery, thence to Glen Haven and conducted a hotel. After a few years in that place he removed to the village of Potosi where he had since lived. He had purchased the Commercial Hotel, destroyed in the big fire of 1900. He then built the present large Commercial Hotel that stands to his memory. He was married to Miss Lena Kuester of Rockville in 1880. To this union were born 3 sons. Mrs Vogelsberg died May 14 1906, following which her husband continued to conduct the hotel prior to 12 years ago, when he relinquished the business to his son, Charles. Joe Vogelsberg, as generally known was a man of sterling qualities, honest and trustworthy and of pleasant disposition. He always greeted people with kind words and was ever ready to give to anyone in need of aid, and his genial countenance will be missed in the community where he passed his entire life. He leaves to mourn his passing, 3 sons, Henry of Cleveland, Ohio; Grover and Charles of Potosi; 2 sisters, Mrs. Louise Morehouse, Lancaster; Mrs. Mary Hillard, Dubuque; 3 brothers, Theodore of British Hollow, Peter and Albert of Dubuque and scores of friends. A high Mass of requiem was read by Rev. L. Schwering, M.S.C., at St. Thomas Church Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock and the funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home to the church and after a short service the cortege wended it's way to the British Hollow Cemetery and the last of the good man was consigned to the grave by the side of his wife who had preceded him in death. Rev. Schwering officiated at the burial service."

* 26 June 1992 - I Visited with Joe Dosier, 94 years old of Potosi, Wisc. According to Joe - In her youth Marie was a very warm, kind person, had a lot of friends. Joe claims to have dated her regularly, but her sisters pressured her to marry Carl Schumacher because he was wealthy. "Carl mistreated Marie and in later years had her committed to a home for the mentally unbalanced so his girl friend could move in with him". Apparently Marie never fully recovered from the death of her son, Thomas. * Middle name Theodora or Theresa?

*We always knew Mary as "Tante" (pronounced Tahn'-tuh), German for "Aunt". *Witnesses at wedding: Peter Vogelsberg and Clara Hillard (was Clara Hillard, a sister of John?) 'Tante' was 41 years old and John was 48 when they married in1901. *John and Mary Hillard are shown in the census of 1910, living at 1105 Washinton St. (Dubuque) *Tante raised my mother (her niece) after Mom's mother died. She was the only "grandmother" that I ever knew. *I remember when we were quite young, my older brother, Bud (George) and I spending a day now and then with Tante during the summer or on a Saturday . She seemed to always want to feed us. *Tante seemed to me to be a gruff-acting lady, but was actually very kind-hearted. She loaned money at no interest, to Mom and Dad to buy the house at 510 Menominee St. in East Dubuque, then later told them they did not have to pay her back. *Repeated the Rosary over and over in German during her last years, when she lived with her niece, Esther Elskamp in Lancaster, Wisconsin. *Tante died at Esther's house. *Bud and I were pallbearers at her funeral . *The birthdate on Tante's headstone is incorrect - she was born in 1860, not 1861. She is shown on the U,S, census of 1860 as being 5/12 years of age. *The only children of Tom and Kate that I knew were Mary and Albert. Albert owned a bar on 8th street in Dubuque and was never very friendly to us as children.
