He married Renate Lethert in Munstereifel, Germany, July 10, 1974. Renate was born March 4, 1953 in Effelsberg, Germany. She is the daughter of Wilhelm Lethert and Hubertine Maria Lanzrath.

Johannes Backes and Renate Lethert had the following children:

3 ii. Petra Backes was born in Bonn, Germany November 15, 1979.

4 iii. Kristina Backes was born in Bonn, Germany December 16, 1989.
