The
Barbour Collection of the Vital Records of Connecticut has a well-deserved
reputation as one of the most complete and accurate state-wide indexes of its
kind. As a transcription, however, it is subject to error and omission. For
death records in Newtown from 1797 to 1821 this is compounded by the fact that
the indexed vital records are themselves transcribed from the Bills of
Mortality first entered in the land record books. This report lists those
deaths where original sources provide more accurate or more complete
information than appears in Barbour. But first a general description of the
early records of Newtown.
Vital
Records
As
in other Connecticut towns, the earliest vital records for Newtown, beginning
with the town's settlement in 1711, were recorded in the one official volume
together with minutes of town meetings, deeds, earmarks, and records of
strays. In a few years, when town minutes were segregated from land records,
the clerk began to record the vital records in the land records or deed
books. In addition, most entries in that first town volume were transcribed
into these deed books.
Vital listings entered in
Land Record Volume 2 (LR2) are interspersed with deeds, and remain in that
volume. Those vital records entered on separate pages at the end of Land
Record Volumes 3-4 (a single volume), 8, 10, and 11, were later removed and
bound together in what is now called Vital Records Volume 1 (VR1). These
early records usually show family groupings, often giving the parents'
marriage date and then listing the births of their children. Deaths are
sometimes included. Dates as early as 1702 appear for some vital events which
occurred in Stratford, Milford, and other towns of origin for the Newtown
settlers.
From a 1915 transcription by
James N. Arnold, these Newtown vital records were indexed as part of the
Barbour Collection of Vital Records. Copies of the index volume for Newtown
are available at the Connecticut State Library, the Newtown clerk's office,
and other repositories. Except as noted here, the index is quite complete,
referring to volumes of the Proprietors Records (PR) and Land Records (LR) as
well as to the Vital Records (VR) proper.
From a search of these
records, no marriages and only one birth was found for which the original or
its accurate transcription is not included in Barbour. In PR 1:1 this reads,
"Mabell Booth daughter of Jon[a]th[an] Booth by Esther his wife born in
Newtown on ye 13 day of December Anno Domini 1722."
At a later date, and beyond
the scope of this report, Newtown researchers should be aware that vital
records for the years 1848 to 1852 appear in three volumes, including one
which is clearly a transcription. One might expect these records to be
indexed in Barbour, but many are omitted entirely, and there is much detail
missing from others. A complete new transcription may be the subject of a
future article.
Bills of Mortality
Beginning
in 1797, a separate list was maintained for Newtown deaths. These, the
original Bills of Mortality for 1797 through 1821, are entered in the front of
Land Record Volumes 19, 20, and 27. For an unknown reason, there is no record
here or elsewhere for 1802. Such original Bills of Mortality for the years
1822 to 1844 have not been found and, since they had been transcribed, may
have been discarded when the early land record volumes were rebound later in
the 19th century.
Isaac Beers, town clerk from
1844 to 1847, transcribed the original Bills of Mortality, including the
now-missing 1822 to 1844, into the book now called Vital Records Volume 2
(VR2), starting from the back of that book. In 1806, 1834, and several years
between these dates he added his name at the bottom of the lists which are all
in his hand until 1847 when he was succeeded. The new clerk, Henry Sanford,
completed the 1847 list and, in 1848, began a vital records book in a new
format. In making his transcriptions, Isaac Beers omitted some details,
including causes of death, ages, and family relationships. He made just a few
errors, and he omitted just a few names. Also, in a later rebinding, a leaf
for 1799 and most of 1800 has been lost from his transcription.
The Barbour Collection
indexes some, but not all, of the original entries from LR19 & 20 (1797-1812)
as well as the transcribed VR entries, but here also some details and a few
entire entries are omitted. Barbour does not index the original entries from
LR27 (1813-1821) but only the VR transcription for this period. Curiously,
Barbour invariably translates black or negro to "colored", the politically
correct term of the early 20th century
Additional details may be
found in a private Bill of Mortality kept from 1797 through 1863 by Henry
Beers, a cousin of our clerk Isaac. This manuscript record is located in the
vault of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library in Newtown. From 1797 to 1818 the
entries are merely transcriptions from the town records, rarely adding
information. However, beginning in 1819, Henry seems to have kept records
from personal knowlege, adding age and cause of death to most entries, though
the town records do not report these details on a regular basis until 1825.
He also adds the deaths of a few non-residents.
The most common cause of
death reported by Henry Beers was consumption, abbreviated "cons." He uses "dys."
for dysentery, perhaps typhoid fever, in the epidemic of September-October
1820 which killed 20 Newtown residents including John Curtis, whose wife was
just four years dead, and four of his children ages 11 to 20. It also killed
four young children and the wife of Agur Blackman, though Blackman survived to
remarry in 1822.
Emended
Death Records
Presented
here is an alphabetized list of deaths from the original Bills of Mortality
appearing in the deed books. Included are all records which correct or add
detail to entries in the Barbour Collection. From a total of some 700 deaths
in this 25-year period, there are about 35 omitted from Barbour or so altered
there as to change the basic import. There are also some 250 with added
details, about half of these from the Henry Beers manuscript.
Sources are as follows:
• LR 14 endsheet
Deaths 1786-1787 (three entries only)
• LR 19 (front of
volume) Deaths 1797-1799
• LR 20 (front of
volume) Deaths 1800-1812
• LR 27 (front of
volume) Deaths 1813-1821
• Henry Beers
manuscript Ages and causes of death, especially 1819-1821
Death records missing or altered substantially in
Barbour are marked "x". Those which add data or small differences to the
Barbour index are marked "+". Such additional details may include
relationships (son or daughter of…), marital status of women, age at death,
and cause of death. Unmarked in this list are a very few correct entries from
Barbour for comparisons of interest with other family deaths. Minor
discrepancies in spelling or in death date (at most a day or two) are not
noted. When provided by Henry Beers or VR, [bracketed] names are added to the
unnamed "wife or daughter of…" or as the optional surnames of negroes. All
Beers references are to the private record of Henry Beers. Those few entries
where the vital r ecords transcription adds information are indicated by the
phrase "VR adds…"
