TOWN HILL CEMETERY

This Cemetery is nearly as old as the one at the Center. A tradition existing in the Bissell family was recently repeated by Mr. Charles H. Bissell, It is to the effect that one Seth Cary, a carpenter, was killed by falling from a house which he was helping to erect for one of the early settlers of the Bissell name, and that he was buried on Town Hill in a place which, on the very day of his burial, became by town vote a public cemetery. This tradition is varified by Seth Cary's gravestone bearing the date of his death as April 11, 1757, and by the entry in Salisbury Town Meeting Records, under the same date, April 11, 1757, authorizing the setting off of "a part of the Market Place or Green on the Town Hill so called, for a burying Place, in the most convenient part of the Green."
This ground is adjacent to the property of the Hotchkiss School. Interments in it are infrequent and probably do not average one per year. Until recently little attention was given to its appearance, but several years ago, an expensive and substantial stone post and iron fence was placed around the yard by Mrs. H. M. Gillette, who also joined Mr. C. H. Bissell in having the enclosure graded, and the monuments put in as good condition as was possible. Since then a permanent up-keep fund has been raised, chiefly by the Bissell and Landon families, assisted by other persons interested, which will eventually yield a handsome annual income.
