q       Stuck and want to get past that "brick wall”…

…then our researchers and speakers are waiting to hear from you.

Who are we?

CPGC was organized in October, 1993, and we are proud to celebrate over fifteen years serving the genealogical needs of Connecticut. At present we have about sixty-five members throughout the nation, most based in Connecticut. Membership is open to genealogical researchers, writers, publishers, instructors, lecturers, managers of genealogical records and genealogists serving heritage and lineage societies. We work with other genealogical societies on projects of mutual concern. CPGC is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization under United States and Connecticut tax laws, and contributions are deductible to the full extent of the law.

The purpose of the Council is to…

q       Foster excellence in genealogical work

q       Enhance professional competence

q       Support Connecticut record repositories

CPGC members…

q       Work with the Connecticut Town Clerks Association, Inc., the Connecticut Public Records Administrator and the State Registrar of Vital Records to improve communication and standardize access procedures

q       Work closely with officials to maintain access and optimal conditions in research facilities

q       Provide voluntary services on projects in indexing and manuscript processing

The Council meets monthly to transact business, discuss various phases of our research and listen to speakers on genealogy. See our schedule of meetings – all are welcome!

Council members subscribe to high standards of ethics expected of professional genealogists. They are experienced with records and repositories and therefore can help you in your search. We have achieved some impressive accomplishments in our short ten-year history:

q       In 1996, CPGC cooperated with other Connecticut organizations and initiated legislation and worked Senator Tim Upson and other officials to develop Public Act 96-258, An Act Concerning Access to Genealogical Records and the Validation of Certain Marriages, which became effective October 1, 1996. This law simplified existing legislation and made genealogical access better for everyone.

q       In 2000, the Connecticut legislature passed Public Act No. 00-146, An Act Concerning Real Estate Filings and The Preservation of Historic Documents. The latest figures from June 2007 show that this act has provided over

$19,795,441

for the preservation of our land and vital records and other historic documents in Connecticut. We are proud that CPGC initiated this legislation. Our late member, Warren D. Buchanan, personally provided an ongoing impetus for this bill and pressed its case for years until it came to fruition. Click here to see the story of this amazing feat.

q       In 2001, CPGC initiated the Town Clerks and Genealogists Action Group, a unique group that has produced some important positive results for Town Clerks, Registrars of Vital Records, and genealogists.

q       In 2004, CPGC successfully fought back proposed legislation that would have closed Birth records to genealogists for 100 years.

q       CPGC members have been actively attempting to control efforts by overactive governmental workers to curtail the peoples’ right to access their records. Click here to see opinions offered about things you should know about identity theft as a genealogist.
