It has been a very long time since, in 1942, Hubert Bookout of Sherman, Texas began to correspond with other Bookouts in hopes of compiling a family history on behalf of all Bookout families. Since his time there have been half a dozen or so other Bookouts and Bookout descendants who have continued his efforts in a scattered way and, for the most part, independently of each other.
Several years ago, with the advent of online computer services, unprecedented cooperation among family historians interested in Bookouts began, and a database giving the basic branches of the Bookout family tree, stemming from Joseph Bookout of Randolph County, North Carolina, has been worked out in considerable detail.
Those of us who subscribe and have contributed to this effort would like to share what we have found with your family. None of us are professional genealogists and all do what we do as amateurs as a matter of sheer interest and family pride.
What we have assembled is not just another electronic compendium of Bookout telephone numbers and addresses from nationwide directories, but a bona fide genealogy of the Bookout family pieced together from censuses, family Bibles, cemetery records, obituaries and contributed documentation. Family lore is included but is decidedly secondary.
It's ironic that the technology that broke up the close-knit family groups we knew as kids, which were often unaware of their extended families, has now provided us the means to bring relatives who never heard of each other together again.
We extend to you our sincere welcome and earnest wish that you will add your store of Bookout information to what we already have.
Across the miles and years,
Bookouts and Bookout descendants are glad to be in touch with you again.
Henry Wade Bookout III

THE 1999 BOOKOUT FAMILY REUNION
reunion continues to attract new attendees. Since starting in
1995, we have had people from 14 states. We would like to see more. We are
helping some people find information on their ancestral line, but it would
help if some researchers would attend our reunion and share some of their
vast knowledge with others.
This year we made a decision to repair the monument for Joseph
Booklet I. The glass was almost completely gone, exposing the small
fieldstone marker to the weather. We had the glass replaced, the monument
steam cleaned, and an inscription added on the back to recognize the man
responsible for saving the original headstone. Without his effort, the
grave site could have been lost forever. This project was made possible in
part by a generous donation from Mr. John F. Bookout, but it has depleted
our cash on hand. Any donations to help with this cost would be greatly
appreciated. We will be glad to assist anyone interested in making a car
trip to Asheboro, NC to visit the grave of Joseph I.
I am enclosing a Survey Form about our reunion. Please complete it
and return it to me. We may need to make some changes.
Our meeting place in conveniently located just off I-85 at the NC/SC
state line (SC exit 106), about 40 miles from Charlotte.
Come early, stay late and bring any old photos, memorabilia, or
family genealogy you think might be of interest to others. I would like to
have copies of your genealogy charts.
Please sign in and get a name tag when you arrive.
Hope to see you there!
