Christopher Reuther, d. April 26, 2007
By Kimberly Thigpen Tart, News Editor, Environmental Health Perspectives, NIEHS, NIH, DHHS and SEJ member:
In Loving Memory of Christopher Glenn Reuther
[photo]
SEJ'06 -- Chris in Burlington
Christopher Glenn Reuther, environmental journalist, photographer, and graphic artist, died April 26 in Honolulu, Hawaii, as a result of a sudden, inflicted cerebral hemorrhage. He was 34 years old [b. Jan 3 1973], and had so much more life to live.
Chris was a longtime resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, though he lived much of his formative years in Enka, outside of Asheville. He attended Enka High School for two years. A childhood spent in the Blue Ridge Mountains planted the seeds of his passion for protecting the earth so that it could continue to give life and beauty to future generations. His later years spent in Chapel Hill gave rise to his deep commitment to the idea that individuals should do whatever is in their power to improve the lives of others. This was his mantra, and he lived it fully.
Chris had a small family that adored him, and also a larger extended family of friends that includes almost everyone who ever met him. He is survived by his mother Judy Wilson of Apex, North Carolina, his father Philip Reuther of Charleston, South Carolina, his sister Heather Litton [b. Oct 1968] and her husband Ken Litton of Westport, Connecticut, his niece Katie and nephew Will also of Westport, his aunt Theresa Arrigon and uncle Robert Arrigon of Setauket, New York, and his beloved dog Jupiter. He is also survived by his stepmother Carolyn Reuther, stepsister Laura Getz, and stepbrother Jason Bennett, all of South Carolina, and other family.
A hallmark characteristic of Chris's was his insatiable curiosity and keen intellect. His junior and senior years of high school he attended the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham. Chris graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Public Health and a B.A. in journalism, simultaneously. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Fraternity and a writer and photographer for The Daily Tar Heel.
The summer before his last year of college, Chris began his career at Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), a science and news journal published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Durham, North Carolina. During the 10 years he was on staff (for an interim year he was a writer for the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), he discovered a love for environmental reporting and a passion for the work of EHP. It became a personal mission for him to improve the lives of people in his own and the larger global community. He was also a skilled amateur photographer, and recorded the world around him in intimate and compelling detail.
He was set to further expand these gifts to make the world a far better place; he had been recently accepted to four different law schools, including the University of Hawaii and Tulane University in New Orleans, where he was offered the Dean's Scholarship. His plan was to study environmental and international law so that he could dedicate his life to empowering those around the world who are powerless to avoid environmental injury.
Chris gave humbly, generously, and often of himself to both friend and stranger alike. He was, in his heart, a citizen of the world. This led him to travel as often and as far as he could, fearlessly embracing new people and experiences as he went. His philosophy was always to give people — and life — the benefit of the doubt. He loved to do anything outdoors, and was learning to be a pilot; there seemed to be no limit he would not challenge.
In the end, it is Chris's unadulterated enthusiasm for life that will be most remembered, and it is fitting that his generous donation of his organs has and will continue to bring new chances at life to many, many people. He would be pleased to know that parts of him will go on to live in the bodies of these people and bring them health, peace, and well-being. It is just as sure that Chris's spirit will continue to live in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him best.
Memorial donations may be made to the Samaritan's Purse Emergency Fund for the rebuilding of New Orleans or to the Society of Environmental Journalists Endowment for the support of high-quality, unbiased news coverage of environmental issues.

R. Burton Litton Jr. -- professor who helped save roadside views
Jill Tucker, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, April 29, 2007
Along the highways and byways of America, there are small pullouts identified by a sign that says something like: Look here!
Many of those places are so identified because R. [Roy] Burton Litton Jr. figured out a way -- a scientific, methodical way -- to identify the best places to pull off the road for a beautiful view.
Mr. Litton was trained as a landscape architect but saw land through the eyes of an artist. Throughout his career, he advised the U.S. Forest Service and other public agencies on how to best preserve the visual impact of the land when building roads, clearing timber or choosing a vista point.
He died April 14 of complications from a stroke. He was 89.
Mr. Litton was a UC Berkeley professor of landscape architecture for four decades, starting his teaching career in 1948 and retiring in 1988.
During his tenure at the university, he created what those in the field call "visual landscape assessment," said his Cal colleague and longtime friend Joe McBride.
In short, he gave the Forest Service a way to cut down trees or place roads without destroying the natural topography of the land, McBride said.
Prior to that, the service made square or rectangular clear cuts or made roads without any regard to what the land would look like.
"It was very creative work on his part," McBride said.
The method included principles garnered from art appreciation classes and landscape painting -- in other words, the things that made a painting beautiful should be preserved within the natural setting or pointed out to weary drivers.
That included taking into account what was in the foreground, middle ground and background of a scene.
Mr. Litton was also an advocate for the common landscape. While Yosemite Valley gets all the press, the Berkeley professor taught his students to also appreciate the views one could find along Highway 120 between Oakdale and Half Dome.
"He believed if we appreciate only Yosemite Valley, it will be easier to trash the common landscape," McBride said.
Mr. Litton was born on April 9, 1918, in Santa Rosa and grew up on a ranch in Healdsburg.
He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1941, but his further studies at Harvard University were interrupted by service in World War II.
During the war, Mr. Litton was a Navy photo interpreter in the Aleutian Islands. There, he converted aerial photos into drawings of what the land would look like from the water to help landing craft troops better understand the topography of beaches and inland areas.
"It was quite a wonderful ability that he had," McBride said.
He later earned his maste9 r's degree at Iowa State University.
During his career and in retirement, Mr. Litton pursued his passion for landscape painting, including scenes from Italy, Japan and New England.
He was, McBride said, a "true gentleman."
"He had many friends, and students from years past always remember him and ask about him," he added.
Mr. Litton was preceded in death by three wives, Barbara Litton, Martha Maclise Swartz and Ava VanAkin, and his son Tom Litton. He is survived by daughter Mary Traynham of Arbuckle (Colusa County); son Edward Litton of El Cerrito; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
University officials are planning a public memorial in the fall.

Pastor’s Wife Killed In Accident
She loved the church and adored music too!
Tammy Litton, wife of a prominent Mobile County pastor died in a car accident on Thursday.
Litton's husband, Reverend Ed Litton, pastors at First Baptist North Mobile. According to church officials, Litton and her daughter were headed to meet a music professor at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that while the two were headed west on U.S. 98 near Lucedale in Greene County, their S-U-V ran into the back of a stalled 18-wheeler truck.
Mrs. Litton died on the scene. Her daughter was treated and released from the hospital. The accident is still under investigation.
Church officials tell News 5 that Litton was a professional musician and had plans to open a music school at the Saraland church next week. The opening has been postponed by a week and will now be part of her legacy.
Tammy Litton leaves behind a husband and three children.

Pastor's wife dies in wreck
Friday, August 17, 2007
By Brendan Kirby Staff Reporter
The wife of a prominent Mobile County Baptist minister died Thursday after crashing into the back of a stalled 18-wheeler in Mississippi, law enforcement authorities said.
Staff Sgt. James Snyder, a spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said Tammy Litton, 47, died on U.S. 98 west of Lucedale in Greene County at the scene of the 3:45 p.m. wreck. Emergency rescue workers took Litton's 13-year-old daughter, Kayla Litton, to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, where she was treated and released.
Tammy Litton was the wife of the Rev. Ed Litton, pastor of First Baptist North Mobile in Saraland.
A mother of three, Tammy Litton was a professional musician with a passion for her church and family, according to friends.
"She was my best friend. She was gifted and talented," said Ellen Stebbins, who taught the cello to Kayla Litton.
Stebbins, whose husband is pastor of Travis Road Baptist Church in Mobile, said she became close to Tammy Litton in part because both were minister's wives and both loved music.
Stebbins said Litton and her daughter were on their way to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg to meet with a music professor about possible cello coaching for Kayla.
Snyder said Thang Pham, 28, an employee of N&L Transportation, was hauling Q-tips west on the four-lane highway when he came to a stop in the right-hand lane.
"Apparently, he ran out of fuel," Snyder said.
Pham put reflective cones around the truck and left to get diesel in a 5-gallon container, Snyder said. He returned, and then moments later, Litton's Chevrolet Tahoe crashed into the 18-wheeler.
Snyder said investigators do not know what caused the accident. Parts of U.S. 98 are notoriously treacherous, but Snyder said this stretch of the highway is straight and clear with three to four miles of visibility.
The sky was clear and the sun does not appear to have been a factor, he said.
"We don't know if any other cars blocked her view, but it's not like there was a hill," he said.
Snyder said there is no indication drugs or alcohol played a role. He said there was no skid marks indicating that Litton tried to brake, although he said that her vehicle hit the truck at an angle.
"It looks like she veered at the last moment," he said.
Stebbins said Litton home-schooled Kayla and her two sons. She also played a big role in First Baptist North Mobile, supporting her husband, who has been a vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Stebbins said Tammy Litton led a women's group at the church that hosted dinners drawing as many as 500 ladies.
With a background in playing the oboe for professional orchestras in Arizona, Litton was active in her church choir and was starting a music school that was set to launch next week at the church, Stebbins said.
Litton's death shocked religious leaders in Mobile County.
"Pastor Litton is, of course, heartbroken over the loss of his wife and thrilled that his daughter is fine," said Thomas Wright, the director of missions for the Mobile Baptist Association. "He is relying on his faith and his friends to help him through this."
Trooper Steven Powe is investigating the accident.
