Kleve
-
Kleve(Cleves) is built on hills, topped by a cliff (for which the town was
named) on which is built the Schwanenburg (Swan Castle), associated with
the legend of Lohrengrin, Knight of the Holy Grail, who according to legend,
came floating up the Rhine in a boat pulled by swans to rescue the Duchess
of Cleves. The story inspired the opera Lohrengrin by Wagner. Kleve was the
seat of powerful dukes, whose height of fame was in 1539 when Anne of Cleves
was married to King Henry VIII of England.
