When erected in 1920 the Leighton Buzzard War Memorial was the largest single piece of undressed granite quarried in the United Kingdom weighing over 22 tons and standing 25 feet 4 inches high and 3 feet 3 inches square, and was extracted by Shap Granite Quarries in about 1870

It took 3 days to erect and a lead tube containing silver and copper coins of the realm was placed in the bolt-hole at the base of the monolith exactly beneath its centre. It was unveiled on 11th November 1920 by Lord Ampthill.
