As we are all aware the 1901 Census is available to us all in the next couple of years. From the Census statistics we can glean a little of the information that will be available. What you may not be aware of is the fact that for the first time ever the Census information will be made available on the Internet as part of the Government's policy to make information more readily available.
This will have the effect of allowing our cousins overseas access to the information without having to travel at all. No longer the need for microfiche, long waits at records offices, etc. How this information will be presented and how it will be accessed is still an unknown quantity but tenders have been made and accepted for the job. If this information is anything like that available from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (http://www.cwgc.org/) then the site will have to be very robust.
The publishing of the information on the Internet does not mean that the information will not be presented in its more usual formats of microfilm or microfiche; these facilities will still be available.
During 1999 the 1881 Census is to be made available on CD-Rom and more information can be found on the site of the Jesus Christ Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) (http://www.lds.org/). By providing the 1901 Census in an electronic format one must wonder how long before this to is available on CD-Rom.
The following pages provide some statistics for the 1901 Census for Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely which combined form the Ancient County. One must wonder about the Strays information that should be available given that nearly 16,000 people migrated from the County.
