Alice STAYTON née NICHOLLS
Christine Hartwell's Grandmother
This photograph was taken in the late 1950's outside our cottage in Aynho. The soldier with her is a visiting American serviceman who kept me (age 5 or 6) supplied with coke and Cheeze Whiz.
Alice was born in Wootton Oxfordshire, spent several years in service in London as a housemaid then "escaped" (her words) to come home to Aynho to look after her mother who had become crippled with arthritis. She married Arthur Stayton and lived on "The Hill" Aynho until the 1961 when we moved to Kings Sutton.
