MARKET DAY

The original marketplace was to the south of St Mary's Church in the centre of Leigh. This area is now taken by the Civic Square. Where the buildings entitled "Barney's Bazaar" stand in this photograph is now the site of Leigh Library. The road pictured is Market Street.

This photograph was taken from the tower of St Mary's Church. It shows the market surrounding the buildings known as "Barney's Bazaar". The large building that is top centre is Leigh Town Hall (built 1903).
