Baptisms, marriages and burials were first recorded in parish registers in 1538 on the orders of Thomas Cromwell. Entries were to be made every Sunday. Sixty years later, it was decreed that the registers would be made of parchment and all previous entries had to be copied up. As many of the earlier records had deteriorated by then, many churches do not possess registers back to 1538. Church dedication dates in brackets - this is not the date the church was built.
