St. John the Evangelist's church is mid 19th C. It consists only of a nave and apsidal sanctuary, with an elaborate timber roof. The village of Purton is on the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal and has several early 19th C brick houses.
Opposite the church is one of Mylne's neo-Greek canal houses, for bridgemen, with Doric columns.
