St. Laurence's Church, situated in The Shambles, Stroud was originally at chapel-of-ease to Bisley in the late 13th Century. The tower with its good tall broach spire is 14th Century. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1866-68. The contemporary font is a High Victorian piece with plentiful use of coloured marbles and alabaster. One of the monuments illustrated here is to Thomas Stephens who died in 1613. The piece is probably by Samuel Baldwin of Stroud. It is made of painted and gilded alabaster with kneeling effigy and composite columns, obelisks and heraldry. In the church there is some excellent stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
