John Wilkes:
"I visited the tiny village of Tarlton in the high Cotswold one Sunday morning. Tarlton is not far from the Coates Portal at the Eastern end of the two and a quarter mile long Sapperton Tunnel. For decades this tunnel allowed boat traffic on the Thames & Severn Canal to reach the upper reaches of the Thames valley near Lechlade. There is talk of restoring the entire length of the canal. The tiny church of St. Osmund's at Tarlton is a gem - very simple, very beautiful. Inside there is a Norman style chancel arch with decorative, chevron patterned, masonry work.
There are some delicate and narrow stained glass windows - some modern, some ancient; and some ornately carved pews. The lights were on and there was a feeling of warmth pervading the church. The congregation comprising some twenty people from the village and surrounding countryside had just moved out into a nearby meadow for an outdoor service - celebrating the glories of the Gloucestershire countryside and singing songs of praise"
