Purefoy Letters
Henry Purefoy of Shalstone (1697-1762) and his mother Elizabeth Purefoy
kept records of their correspondence from 1735-1753 in three letterbooks.
A number of these letters have been published in two separate books. The
first, compiled by George Eland, was published in 1931. The second, compiled
by Leslie Mitchell, was published in 1973. Both are unfortunately out of
print, but can be found in many larger libraries, and turn up from time
to time in used book stores and online auctions. These books are an invaluable
resource for anyone researching people who lived in 18th century Shalstone
and the surrounding communities. I have a copy of the Mitchell book, and
will be happy to check the index for you ancestor's name upon request.
The Eland book has been scanned by Google books. You can
search
the book and see it in snippet view.
Rectors of Shalstone
The genuki page has a list of
Rectors
of the Parish of St. Edward the Confessor and King.
Enclosure and Tithe Commutation
Shalstone was enclosed by private act of parliament in 1768. The property
owners in the parish at that time were George Huddleston Purefoy Jervoise
and Richard Taylor. The enclosure act included an allotment to the rector
in lieu of tithes for the land belonging to Purefoy Jervoise. The lands
belonging to Richard Taylor remained tithable until 1850, when a rent charge
was instituted instead. In 1850, Taylor's land was occupied by the Richardson
and George families. Records of the Taylor family can be found in the London
Metropolitan Archives.
