There are 3 Record Offices in Devon based in Exeter, Barnstaple and Plymouth each of them holding archive collections relating to their geographical area. Therefore, before visiting it is important to establish where the records are held that you wish to view.
North Devon Record Office provide a useful guide: Which Record Office Should I Visit?
If in doubt though, staff are always happy to answer queries, so it is worth contacting them in advance. Remember that some records are only available to view on microfiche or microfilm, so you may need to book a fiche or film reader in advance.
If you are unable to visit any of the offices to do your own research, Devon Record Office (Exeter) and North Devon Record Office (Barnstaple), both offer a research service. Plymouth and West Devon Record Office do not offer a research service, but retain a list of Archive Researchers (Record Agents) you can hire and who can be contacted through their website.
