Norwood Family |
The NORWOODs are believed to have originated in the
county of Kent, England, where Sir Stephen de Northwode (bef
1177-1231), son of Jordan of Sheppey1,
first adopted the Norman-style surname, descriptive of the north
woods of his estate on the "Island of Sheep." |

George & Jane PIKE
and their children Samuel (& his wife Eleanor FOREMAN & their
son George), Caroline, Eleanor and Mary J, Left Kent county for New
York in 1834. Another Daughter Sophia and her husband Edwin
SHIRLEY and their children Edwin, Elizabeth, John & Samuel Hood
later made the same journey about 1840. They all settled in
western New York in Orleans County (where I live). Many of them
later moved to Michigan and have remained there for several
generations. Jane PIKE's maiden name may have been PEARCE.
George and Jane PIKE appear to have had an older son who
likely remained in Kent. Their names show up in records of the
villages south of Maidstone, including Boughton Monchelsea, Chart
Sutton, Thurnham, Hollingsbourn. |
