Horncastle Hotels

Historic Hotels, Inns and Pubs of Horncastle

Introduction

Hotels, Inns and Pubs often provided rooms for travellers. They were often constructed:

The value to the family historian occurs when you can find someone from your family who is "missing" from home in the census, or who has been hired from their parish to work as a maid or server in such an establishment. You will find some people worked for years at one place, only to be "promoted" by moving to another such establishment.

If you have any additional history on these Public House, Inss and Hotels, I will be pleased to add it or a link to it.

The Horncastle Civic Organization has done some research on old inns and has produced a number of photographs on a web page.

The Angel Inn, 65 North St.

Still in operation, appears to be early 20th century. I could find no references to it in the pre-1913 Directories. There is a photograph on the Geo-graph site.

The Black Horse, 1 Bridge St.

This establishment was opened before 1842 and may have closed shortly after 1905. The Horncastel Civic Org. has a photo. Also, see the Closed Pubs website. Here are the names associated with the hotel in different years:
