Description and Travel

West Fen is a parish nine miles north of Boston and east of Coningsby. The parish covered about 2,570 acres in 1911.

Politics and Governance

• West Fen was a township from 1812 to 1880.
  
  
• This parish was formed in 1880 under Queen Victoria and consisted of detached parts (Fen allotments) of Mavis Enderby, Hareby, Hundleby, West Keal, Raithby, Freiston and Leverton.
  
  
• The parish was in the ancient Bolingbroke Soke in the South Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey.

Poorhouses, Poor Law, etc.

• As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, when the parish was formed in 1880, it became part of the Spilsby Poor Law Union.

Schools

• The children of this parish attended schools at Medlam and Stickney.
  
  
• A School Board was formed on 10 Jan. 1879 for the West Fen United District, which consisted of Carrington, Frithville and Westville parishes. The Board met once a month in Boston. This board approved the building of the school at Medlam in Revesby parish in 1880.
