From: "Janet Ogden" Subject: Arnold of Everdon plus Bird I have the BIRD FAMILY AND ARNOLD FAMILY FROM EVERDON NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. - In a nutshell - My ancestor Dorothy BIRD married a Thos. LORD and took their family on the ship 'ELIZABETH AND ANNE' to USA in 1635 and joined the REV. THOMAS HOOKER - where they all went to escape religous persecution [puritans]. Thomas Lord kept his lands in Leicestershire worked by other family and friends, as well as having lands in USA. Dorothy and Thomas's eldest son Richard had gone ahead the year before to help pave the way. They were members of Hooker's legendary trek of 100 miles through wilderness to the Connecticet River and founding of Hartford, Connecticut, where they initially dug out caves in the hillside for shelter to them and their animals. On the journey Mrs. Hooker - an invalid - was carried on a horse litter. They lived off the milk of their animals and 'what God provided'. I have Birds in my tree back to 1430, however some earlier Birds had roosted in Leicestershire prior to settling in EVERDON in the 1500's. My Arnold Family includes Sir Malcolm Arnold 'the people's composer' who among other brilliant works composed the film score to Bridge over the River Kwai. Any one with any links please get in touch - Happy to share other information. Have details of several wills from 1500 - 1650.
