Introduction

East Knoyle is situated where the Wiltshire countryside blends into Dorset. Quaint, pretty and typical of many other parishes across Wiltshire, East Knoyle’s links with English history set it apart from most. Sir Christopher Wren, the great mathematician and architect, was born here on 20th October 1632.  Although East Knoyle can rightfully claim to be the birthplace of Christopher Wren, he spent very little time there.   As a boy he suffered poor health and spent most of his time in Windsor; at the age of 9 he became a boarder at Westminster School.  It was Christopher’s father, Rector of East Knoyle from 1623-1646, who left a lasting legacy to the village through the amazing alabaster murals he designed for St. Mary the Virgin Church which can still be seen today.
