Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio Painesville Telegraph, Painesville, Ohio 14 October 1935, p. 1 Matt Pohto Dies Following Stroke Preparing to attend a farewell party to be given for his nieces in Painesville Saturday evening, Matt Pohto, aged 60, of 116 Fourth St., Fairport, a Finnish war veteran, suffered a stroke and died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 8:05 p.m. at Lake County Memorial hospital. A resident of Fairport for 35 years, Mr. Pohto had worked at the Diamond Alkali plant for 20 years. He served in the ranks of the Finnish army in the war against Russia before he came to America. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his wife, Maria; three daughters, Mrs. Tony Jusola of Painesville, Mrs. Jacob Hietanen of Perry and Mrs. William Hill of Fairport; five sons, Bernie, Lauri, Arne, Egene and Robert, all of home; seven grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. John Somppi of Painesville, and four others in Finland; nine brothers, Jacob, Isaac and Mikko of Fairport, John of Warren, O., and four others in Finland. A short prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the residence, followed by funeral services at the Finnish National Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. The Rev. G.A. Aho will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Rites at 1:30 p.m. in the Potti Funeral Home were followed by services at the Immanual Lutheran Church. Albin Luoma, soloist, was accompanied by Ellis Hakola, church organist, at the church service. A large number of friends and relatives from Fairport, as well as out of town, attended the services. Five sons and a grandson were the pallbearers. They included Vernie, Laurie, Arne, Eugene and Robert Pohto and Raymond Hietanen. Burial was in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. Dr. G. A. Surviving are her husband, John, a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Ames, a son Theodore and four grandchildren, all of Painesville; six brothers, Jacob, Isaac, Mikko and Charles Pohto, all of Fairport, and Antti and franz Pohto, in Finland, and four sisters, Mrs. Sanna Koskivara, Mrs. Justina Pouttu, Mrs. Liisa Kangas and Mrs. Ida Rajamäki all of Ylistaro, Finland. He had been in failing health the last two years. He was born in Ylistaro, Finland, August 27, 1872 and came to Fairport from Finland in 1900. He was employed at the Daimond Alkali Co. until he retired three years ago. Mr. Pohto was the father of 10 sons, two of whom are deceased, three daughters and 18 grandchildren living in the United States. One grandson was killed in World War II. Survivors are his wife, Maria Wilhelmina, sons John of Euclid, HErbert of Tiffin, Jacob R of Painesville, Reuben, Benjamin, Caleb, Joel and Merton of Fairport, daughter Mrs. Ann Laczko of Cleveland, Mrs. Elna Makee of Painesville and Lynne of Fairport. He has four brothers, Mikko and Charles of Fairport and Francis and Antti of Finland, and three sisters in Finland, Justiina, Susanna and Ida. Born in Finland, Mr. Pohto came to this country and to Fairport when he was 24 years old. He married Miss Serafia Koski of Fairport on Sept 21, 1900 and they lived at the Eagle St. address for many years. Mr. Pohto was a plumber and carpenter by profession. He was a member of the Suomi Zion Lutheran Church, the Knights of Kaleva lodge and the LIberty Club. Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Saranpa of Cleveland, Mrs. Lila Enters of Fairport, MRs. Painesville, Ohio Painesville Telegraph, Telegraph Date: April 01,1959 pps.1 & 4 Fairport Bicyclist, 68, Killed on Foggy Road -Hit Near Diamond Rt. 535 Entrance - a 68-year-old Fairport man bicylcing to work Tuesday night was killed when he was struck from behind by a station wagon on fog-shrouded Rt. 535 near the Diamond Alkali Co. plant in Painesville Twp. The victim, Mikko N Pohto, of 521 Sixth St., was Lake County's sixth traffic fatality this year. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Lake County Memorial Hospital at 10:26 p.m., hospital attendants said. Deputy County Coroner, Dr. John W Davis ruled death was due to cerebral lacerations. Barbara A Schelbeloffer, 27, of Walter Main Rd., Geneva, who was driving the station wagon, told Lake County sheriff's deputies the bicycle didn't have any lights on. She said she was traveling east slowly on her way home following the center line in the highway because of the heavy fog when Mr. Pohto was hit. The accident occurred at 10:10 p.m. in front of the Diamond Alkali Co. truck gate. The woman was not held. Investigation by the deputies disclosed that Mr. Pohto, who also was going east, was traveling on the edge of the highway when his bicycle was struck in the rear by the 1958 model station wagon. There were no lights on his bicycle, deputies said. Mr. Pohto, was was employed by Diamond Alkali Co. for the last 46 years, was the oldest employee in terms of seniority at the plant. He worked as an oiler in the mill room from the day he was first employed, Jan. 11, 1913. Born in Ylistaro, Finland, Sept. 6, 1890, Mr. Pohto had resided in Fairport for the last 46 years. A member of the National Lutheran Church in Fairport, he was very active as a church layman. Survivors - Surviving him are his wife, Saima; three daughters, Mrs. William Wheeler of Perry, Mrs. Ned Klumph of Santa Clara, Calif., and Mrs. Carol Deakin of Long Beach, Calif., two sons, Arvo J of Fairport and Dr. Allen R. of Painesville. In addtion there are eightgrandchildren who survive, a brother, Charles of Fairport, two sister and two brothers in Finland. Born May 30, 1892, in Ylistaro, Finland, he lived in Fairport most of his life. He operated the bakry for several years before closing it during World War II. He was a member of the Fairport Police Department for several years. HE was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Fairport: Temple Lodge No. 20 Free and Accepted Masons, Painesville; and the Elks Lodge NO. 549, Painesville. Survivors include his wife, Lempi; two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Doris) Berwaldt of Painesville an Mrs. Ralph (Phyllis) Kruse of Willowick; two sons, C Edwin of Sacramento, Calif and Rodney of Painesville; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
