Obituary For: Esa Johnson (15 September 1867-29 May 1938) ************************************************************************ Submitted by: Colleen, Date:2006 © All rights reserved. ************************************************************************ Fergus Falls News Tuesday 31 May 1938 ESA JOHNSON (Hyyppa) of Newton Dies at Age of 70 _____________________ Prominent Resident of Newton Township dies of Heart Disease _____________________ Esa Johnson died Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at his home in Newton township from Heart trouble. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr Johnson was born in Finland 15 September 1867. He came to Ohio in 1885, and from there moved to Duluth where he lived for 3 years. His marriage to Miss Lizzie Nikula took place at Duluth in 1889, and later they moved to this community, buying a farm in Newton township. In 1909 he and his family moved to Crocket North Dakota, where they farmed for 10 years. During the flu epidemic, his wife died, and soon afterwards the family returned to New York Mills. In 1919 he was married a second time to Mrs Mary Lind. Ten children were born to the first union and 2 to the second. Surviving besides his wife are the following daughters and sons: Mrs Charles Wick, NYMs. Mrs Bjorn, Rock Michigan, Mrs Anna Batron of Crockett, North Dakota, Mrs Waino Nissi NYMs, Mrs Harold Kiminki, Hibbing, John Johnson of Menahgan, Andrew Johnson NYMs, Roy Johnson of Cambridge, and Miss Irene Johnson at home. He also has 7 stepchildren. Mr Johnson was a charter member of the Topelius National Evangelical Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held Friday from the New York Mills Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. S A Krankkala of Sebeka officiating.
