William Wesley Holmes came to Bay County, which was then part of Washington County, around 1863 by covered wagon. William Wesley was born in Georgia in 1830 and died in Millville, Florida 28 October 1884. William Wesley Holmes was sent by the Confederate Government to Watson Bayou to make salt. After the war William Wesley bought a schooner and engaged in the Pensacola and St. Andrews Bay trade, building larger vessels as the need demanded. William Wesley and his family were among the earliest settlers of what is now known as Millville.
