Bay County Genealogical Society Programs

BCGS Monthly Meetings

Our monthly meetings are held the third Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. in the conference room of the new Bay County Public Library at 898 West 11th Street, Panama City, Florida. (Exception: meetings are not held in July and August.) We provide interesting, informative, and timely presentations on a variety of topics by a variety of speakers. We do not conduct business during our regular meetings, which begin at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, 17 October 2015:
Advanced Autosomal DNA by Jerry Merritt.

The Bay County Genealogical Society's speaker will be Jerry Merritt. Many of you may remember that Jerry came over from Pensacola and talked with us about genetic genealogy in 2013 and African American genealogy in 2012. This year he will present a PowerPoint presentation on how to use genetic genealogy (dna testing) for genealogical purposes.

His presentation will use the 23andMe database which Caroline Windham used in her June 2015 genetic genealogy group presentation. Jerry will use his own results to explain how the matching tools can be used to find missing links and bricked wall ancestors. He will also use some handy charts that will help us determine relationships like full or half 3rd cousins. He will conclude his presentation on how to download our genetic files to independent utilities in order to find matches who have tested with other companies and matches on specific segments.

Saturday, 24 October 2015:
BCGS Fall Seminar with C. Ann Staley CGSM, CGLSM.

See our seminar form under "Seminar 2015" to the left.

Saturday, 21 November 2015: by Fred Borg.

Ancestry.Com has gotten a lot of good publicity lately through their sponsorship of the TV show "Who Do You Think You Are?" It's a great resource and is continually being updated and expanded as new material gets added to their database. This presentation will go over the basics of searching and go into some of the lesser-known features of the Ancestry.Com web site.

Saturday, 19 December 2015:
Christmas Party by Santa Claus.
