Autosomal DNA Testing: What is it and What can it tell me? By Janice M. Cronan

Autosomal DNA (atDNA) is a genetic genealogy test which is available for both men and women. atDNA only survives recombination (the passing down of DNA from your maternal and paternal ancestors) for an average of 57 generations. Researchers find this test useful for connecting with genetic cousins who sometimes have have traditional documentation that helps break down recent generational "brick walls." The results from this test also provides some information about our ethnic mix (% of ancestry which came from Europe, Africa, Asia, or Native American). The following companies offer these tests for $99: 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, and Ancestry.com. Janice has tested with all 3 of these companies and will use her results when comparing each company.
