Learn more about DeSoto's history
If you would like to learn more about local history, whether you are a life-long resident or a newcomer, come visit the DeSoto County Historical Society. We would welcome you as a visitor or member. We usually have a speaker and a dutch treat luncheon. Our speaker this month was Adrian Cline, our local superintendent of schools. He gave an excellent presentation about the ongoing restoration of the old Owens School house located on Thigpen Road in the Owens community. We applaud Cline and the DeSoto County School Board for restoring this historical building. Our president John A. (Johnny) Reynolds was awarded a plaque from the DeSoto County Commission for writing the narrative part of the Preservation 2000 project grant. Commissioner Barbara Smith announced the Liverpool Park site has been approved. The site of the old town of Liverpool is on this property, as well as the Liverpool phosphate ruins. It is also one of the major calving grounds for the Florida Manatee in this area. It is not a park yet, so please honor it as private property until it officially becomes a park. Thanks! We are not having a scheduled business meeting in December. Instead we are having a Christmas party at the Sandusky Manor. Our next scheduled meeting will be held Jan. 14, 1999, at Paradise Restaurant at noon. Come join the fun.
