Dear Genie:
I cannot find an ancestor in a census record but I'm positive he lived in a certain enumeration district.
Genie:
Try switching the names; i.e. surname for given name and vice versa and also interchanging the middle name for surname or given name.

Dear Genie:
How can I find out the religion of an ancestor from a WILL or even a DEED?
Genie:
If the document begins with "In the name of God, Amen..." You can pretty much rely on the fact that the Person was not a Quaker or was not a member of any other religion that was against oath taking.

Dear Genie:
I have a picture of a relative that was taken by Olan Mills. The picture has a number on the back. Is it an inventory number or can it tell me when the picture was taken?
Genie:
For the years of 1904-1978 the number on the back is a file number used by Olan Mills Sr.
Today, Olan Mills' proofs have an identification number that tells the company which studio took the picture and when it was taken. The first four digits identify the studio; the next six digits give the date. The company now keeps negatives on file for only two years, after which clients can obtain a copyright release that allows customers to use the picture or make copies. Their website is www.olanmills.com

Dear Genie:
I have a friend who has just been given what her Dad terms "a bit bunch of old junk". Seems it is 500 pages of Genealogy going back to the 1600's in France and then she thinks to Canada and then to the USA. She keeps encountering the following---a surname followed by the letters dit and then just another surname. Example: (though I have not seen it, just relating her description) Caritey dit Jones.
Genie:
"Dit" stands for also known as, also spelled dite or ditte; in other words your surname would read: Caritey also known as Jones.
