The Fort Cooper Chapter is in our third year of organization and continuing to work towards the three objectives of The Daughters of the American Revolution: Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism. We organized with fifty-six members, have increased our membership to seventy-eight and we have lost seven organizing members through death. "Gone but not forgotten."
The Chapter has been recognized by the State Society Daughters of the American Revolution with Certificates of Award for outstanding achievement for the following work: Outstanding Achievement in Commemorative Events, DAR Magazine Advertising, Donating Money to DAR Schools, Sending Labels to DAR Schools, Caring and Outreach, Lineage Research, Participating in the Veteran's Fair With Flag Code Brochures, DAR Service for Veterans, American History and Public Relations and Media. Many of our members have also received Individual Awards. One of our sisters placed third in the American Heritage State Contest, Fiber Arts division this year.
The Fort Cooper Chapter acknowledged the outstanding JROTC Cadets from the three local high schools; Citrus, Crystal River and Lecanto. A DAR certificate, JROTC Medal and a check were given to each. We are also continuing to collect needed items for the Haley Veteran's Hospital Nursing Home and monies for the Haley House, which provides free home-like facilities for families to spend needed time with recuperating wounded Veterans. The Chapter participates in the OCP, a program that provides "manufacturer's coupons" to military families at overseas bases. To date we have contributed over $198,500 in coupons. Several Chapter members were very active in the Cancer Relay for Life Program. We participated in Veteran’s Programs and in our local Veteran’s Day Parade, also in celebration of Flag Day at Fort Cooper State Park, and we are participating in the Veterans History Project to collect and preserve audio/video oral histories, letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and home movies of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them. We also have several members volunteering in the Adult Literacy Program as tutors with the local libraries. One of our members is in training for the DAR Museum Correspondent Docent Program and we have several other members participating in the Descendants Project.
