Genealogical Society of Sarasota members led by John Noyes, in conjunction with the Selby Public Library Staff, have produced a shelf listing
of the “Non-Circulating” and “Circulating” resources in the Genealogy Area of Selby Public Library, map for Selby Library.
Two books with this information and the following internet listing have been updated & republished in April 2013. The books are located at the Genealogy Help Desk. Also, the listings on this page can be accessed online from home or with computers at the library.
The “Non-Circulating” titles are listed by shelf location, which is helpful to the library researcher. For example, the
titles of the resources for New York State are listed by their call number, which is how they are positioned on the shelves
in the New York Section. There are a total of 6,474 titles in “Non-Circulating.” This listing is useful to check what is
available at Selby Public Library to plan your visit to the library to do your research.
The “Circulating” titles are listed in the same groupings, with one additional group, “How-To” research various genealogy
locations, has been added. All of these books are shelved in one area and are arranged by ascending “Call Numbers.” There
are 1,182 titles in “Circulating.” About two thirds of them are duplicates of items in “Non-Circulating”, but the other one
third are items only available in “Circulating.” These “Circulating” items can be checked out and taken home to be studied.
Notice that in this listing, information on items with identical titles has been added in “bold print.” Also, duplicate titles have been deleted from the list.
Additional bibliographical information about the genealogy books in this collection is available online in the card catalog for the Sarasota County Library System. When searching with the card catalog, there is a way to limit results to genealogy resources. Near the top of the card catalog webpage, there are three search boxes. In the third box, change "View Entire Collection" to "Genealogy" before searching.
The Genealogical Society of Sarasota would like to express our sincere gratitude to John Noyes, a long time member, for the multitude of hours he spent compiling this list for our use.
