Florida Newspaper Project

During the early years of white Settlement, the newspapers in Tampa carried the news for Hernando county.  The newspapers included the Florida Peninsular, Tampa Journal and the Sunland Tribune.  By the late 1880's the Tampa Tribune became Tampa's news paper.  Portions of these news papers are on line and listed to the left.  Brooksville also had its own newspapers in the early 1900's.  A portion of them have been transcribed and placed in the Florida Genweb Archives a link is provided to the Archives.  Today Hernando is covered by the Hernando Today section of the Tampa Tribune.

Religious based newspapers also served the population of Florida.  They carried items about the lives of their members such as marriages and deaths.  The Baptist Church had several newspapers which covered the south.  The Methodist had a newspaper as did the Presbyterians.  I have found no locations which carry online transcriptions of these various newspapers.

The University of Florida, Gainesville is the repository of the Florida Newspaper Project.
