Schedule of Meetings, September, 2008 - June, 2009

September 14, 2008 Report on 28th IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Chicago by Marcia Finkel, Barbara Musikar and Frances Waxman.
October 19, 2008 Dr. Abe Lavender will talk on "Jewish Female DNA: Comparisons of Ashkenazi and Sephardi Women From Recently Released Research Findings." Abe has previously spoken to us about the big picture of Jewish DNA. This talk will give results of data published only a few months ago, for the first time allowing comparisons of the ancestries of Ashkenazi and Sephardi women.
November 2, 2008 Dr. Annette Fromm will talk on "Genealogy of the Greek Speaking Jews of Ioannina, Greece." Annette's recent book is entitled "We Are Few: Folklore and Ethnic Identity of the Jewish Community of Ioannina, Greece." She has previously spoken to us on Sephardic naming patterns, but this talk will discuss the genealogy of one specific Romaniot community in northwestern Greece.
December 7, 2008 Professor Seth H. Bramson is a native of Miami Beach, and is an adjunct professor of history at Florida International University. "L'Chaim: The History of the Jewish Community of Greater Miami" is his recently published 160-page book which includes over 180 photographs and reproductions of historic items, with commentary about the area's history. Bramson begins the book with Isidor Cohen who moved to Miami in February, 1896, and his wife Ida. He also includes discussion of their son, Eddie Cohen, and daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Sydney Weintraub. In addition to the Cohens and the early years, Bramson discusses the restrictions against Jews, and gives examples of the businesses, schools, temples, restaurants, clubs, and hotels from throughout Miami-Dade County that are connected with Jews. Also included in the book are discussions of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Douglas Gardens, and the Jewish Museum.
This is also OUR ANNUAL HANUKAH PARTY, with the Gift Grab Bag, decorations, and refreshments.
January 18, 2009 Help! I Have Hit a Brick Wall! The program this month is going to be our popular Q and A session with emphasis on trying to break down the walls brick by brick. Professor Abe Lavender will moderate. He is our DNA guru. We are very excited that Steve Lasky "curator" of the Museum of Family History plans to be at the meeting to offer his expertise pending his schedule. All attendees will be encouraged to jump in with any questions or feel free to answer any question that has been asked. This will be your chance to help solve conundrums and perhaps have some of your own solved or ask those questions you have wanted to ask but did not know whom to ask.   Remember: There is no such thing as a silly or stupid question, so don't be shy to participate. Everyone is welcome -- non-member guests can bring their brick walls, too.
February 8, 2009 Dr. Stephen Morse will be returning for another exciting talk. We will also be celebrating our Twentieth Anniversary with a party.
March 1, 2009 Field trip to the main public library, downtown Miami, 101 W. Flagler Street, to meet with the new genealogy librarian and to see what's available and new in the genealogy-related collections. The meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.
April 12, 2009 "From Suvalki, Poland, to San Antonio, to Miami: Report on a 2006 trip to Poland to Research the Roots of the Lipnatzki-Lipner Family"
Dr. Ken Lipner, retired professor of economics at FIU, visited his ancestral hometown in Poland a few years ago. He will report on the research he conducted there and the reaction of Polish people to his research. He also has a variety of interesting data such as photographs which he will show.
May 3, 2009 A Review and Availability of Our Library Collections & Nomination of Officers and Board

Joan Parker, Marcia Finkel and David Rafky were among the 16 members who recently visited the main branch of the Miami Public Library after a three-year hiatus. They will briefly talk about what is new and available now. Each will also tell what they found of interest in the materials and collections, the new readers and how to use them. The Nominating Committee will offer the slate for officers for the 2009-2010 season. At that time anyone who wishes may volunteer for a position as an officer or on the board.
The remainder of the meeting will be devoted to the Society's genealogical Reference library which is located in the CAJE library at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation building. Marci Wiseman, CAJE librarian, will give us a tour of the CAJE library and an overview of their collection. She will be available during our meeting for questions and access to our reference collection. Reference books are never allowed to be checked out.
Also available will be the Main books on our Library Cart that only members can check out. Visitors are more than welcome to peruse both our collections: Reference and Main.
June 7, 2009 Election of officers and our end of year program: "Successes and Failures."
