Visited on 2/17/2001, transcribed by Vickie Sevens and Rachele Dunlap.
Located on M L King Blvd in downtown Tallahassee Florida. Established in 1829 this is the oldest public cemetery in Tallahassee. It was laid out in square lots in 1841 when a Yellow Fever Epidemic broke out in Tallahassee. When first built it was outside the city boundaries on the outside of a wide clearing that protected the city from Indian attacks. People from all walks of life are buried here such as governors, slaves, planters, union soldiers, confederate soldiers, and yellow fever victims. The white burials were on the Eastern portion and the slaves and free people of color were on the western section. It is surrounded by a cast iron fence and is very well kept. There are many beautiful markers and tombs.
Below are some photos taken by Vickie at the Old City
Cemetery, they are small; to see a larger copy click on the photo.

"NOTE" This is a partial listing of this cemetery, the remainder will be posted in the near future.
Some of the notables buried here are:
Henry Huthinson in 1839. He was shot by accident while pursuing Indians who had murdered the family of Green Hill Chaires.
Thomas Brown, Governor of Florida 1849-1853
John Proctor, a free man of color, served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1873-1885. He died in 1944 a few weeks before his 101 birthday.
Thomas Vann Gibbs, founder of the Florida State Normal Industrial School, now known as Florida A&M University
The Rev James Page, the first ordained black Baptist Minister in Florida. It is said that over 3000 people attended his funeral in 1883.
Father Joseph Hugon, builder of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tallahassee.
Elizabeth Budd Graham, rumors called her a witch. She has the largest monument and it stands above 12 feet. The inscribed monument faces west instead of east as the others are which is believe to have been a sign of disgrace but this is not apparent in the size and stature of her monument.
Dr William J Gunn, the first African American in Florida to graduate from medical school.
The cemetery is open from Sunrise to Sunset and no head stone rubbings are allowed.
