By simply connecting with the Web site, you can read the text. However, with a little additional effort, you can download a couple of software programs that allow you to: (1) display the text in SGML format and (2) view the images that are imbedded. Even without these program enhancements though, just reading the text manuscripts is a wonderful experience. The materials are arranged by state. You can view a map with the states highlighted and then click on the state whose stories you would like to read. A list of the stories' titles is listed. You can then click on a story and it will be downloaded for you to view. The stores are typically between 2,500 and 15,000 words in length. There is also a search facility available that allows you to search for keywords or names.
As a bonus, from the "Voices of the Thirties" collection, there are some digitized sound files containing portions of some interviews that were captured on tape recorders. Depending on your Web browser, you may or may not be able to listen to these recordings. All of these materials provide an insight into the life and times of American citizens during the Depression. I urge you to partake of this wonderful feast at the Library of Congress Web site. Regardless of whether you find an ancester here or not, these stories weave a wonderful tapestry of historical insight for you. Read a couple every day. I hope you'll be enjoying them as much as I am. Happy Hunting! George Copyright 1998 George G. Morgan and copied from Ancestry Daily News. This column was originally published in the Genealogy Forum on America Online - Thanks George!!!!

Library of Congress - the most well-developed historical and informational government website in the US.The Library of Congress has compiled an impressive collection of stories from the 1930s. At that time, the WPA fostered something called the Federal Writers' Project. During the period 1936-1940, over 300 writers from 24 states conducted interviews and wrote stories about individuals' personal experiences during the Depression years. There are also many stories about people's experiences going back into the 1800s too, such as the article called "At Christmastimes" about life in SC from the Civil War onward. Some of these pieces are written in report style or are case histories; others contain narrative. They are the stories of real people from many walks of life, descriptions of their everyday lives and real experiences. The stories provide a compelling insight into the life and times through which our ancestors lived in this difficult economic period in American history. These manuscripts are part of the American Memory Collection at the Library of Congress. You can access these incredible materials at the Web site: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/wpaintro/wpahome.html.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM), General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation Website - This site provides live database and image access to more than two million Federal land title records for the Eastern Public Land States dating back to 1820. This site offers researchers a source of information on the initial transfer of land title from the Federal Government to individuals. In addition to verifying title transfer, this information will allow the researcher to place an individual (patentee) at a specific location (legal land description) in time (signature date). These records can be accessed at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov. Although the definition for "Eastern Public Land State" isn't provided, the states included are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Louisana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This site is rather amazing in that it is free, easy to access, contains valuable information, and is run by the Government. borrowed from Brown-L@rootsweb.com mail list - author unknown
