
Martin County was established in 1925 from a portion of Palm Beach County and from a much smaller portion of St. Lucie County. It is located north of the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area, south of Ft. Pierce on the Atlantic Ocean, and is the southern-most county of the Treasure Coast region. It is bordered by Okeechobee, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties, and was named for John W. Martin, governor from 1925 to 1929.
Martin County consists of the City of Stuart [County seat], and the Towns of Jupiter Island, Ocean Breeze Park, and Sewall's Point. It also includes the communities of Hobe Sound, Hutchinson Island, Indiantown, Jensen Beach, North River Shores, Palm City, Port Salerno, Rio, South County, and Tropical Farms. Other smaller communities include: Arundel, Bessemer, Bluefield, Fruita, Golden Gate, Gomez, Goral Gardens, Lighthouse Point, Marcy, Port Mayaca, Port Sewall, Rio, Rocky Point Estates, Salerno, Seminole Shores, Skyline Park, Snug Harbor, Tropic Vista, and Zana.
