Fern Hill Cemetery
Stuart, FL
Created in 1905 when Stuart was part of Dade County, Fern Hill Cemetery is located on the east side of State Route 76 at 1501 S. Kanner Highway, 0.3 miles south of US 1 and north of the Monterey Road / Palm City bridge intersection with Kanner Hwy. An in-depth history of the cemetery was published by Nancy E. Hemphill for the Fern Hill Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum company in the late 1990's. A copy of this booklet is available in the Genealogy Room of the Blake Library.
The cemetery is divided into the Original / Old and New Sections. The plat for the New Section was filed on May 4, 1960. Information on burials in this New Section may be available from Aycock Funeral Homes, Dignity Memorial, at telephone # 772-283-6246. Aycock Funeral Homes purchased the 30 acres cemetery from the City of Stuart in 1987; the city operated the cemetery from 1957 to 1987. This website is initial presenting only the Old Section data.
The burial records for the Old Section have been given to the Martin County Historical Society and are housed in the Elliott Museum. Members of the Martin Co. Genealogical Society have transcribed and indexed this information and it is presented below. Also added to the burial data is the obituary index information from the local newspaper of the time, available on microfilm at the Blake Library. These names have not been added to this website's Master Name Index.
The Old Section data is presented in an alphabetical format, by last names, and also in a location format. It is suggested that the alphabetical database be accessed first, and upon finding the appropriate person, note the Block #. Then go to the location database and see who is buried near your person of interest. The tombstone inscriptions are presented as published in 1974, except, for a few names, a second line was needed to show the entire first line. Use your browser FIND routine under EDIT to locate a name of interest.
