This small, now well-kept community cemetery, consisting of 2.4 acres, was originally called "The Colored Cemetery of New Monrovia". It was incorporated in 1978 under its present name and, in recent years, has been under the supervision of a Board of Trustees, which includes Mrs. Eula Weems. Mrs. Weems has been very instrumental in its preservation and is in possession of most of the old records. Her family has been maintaining the cemetery in recent times.
At the time of Janet Hutchinson's The History of Martin County (1975), this cemetery was "forlorn-looking", "not very well maintained", and contained 15 gravesites. Fortunately, this has now changed and the rows of neat gravesites, consisting of mostly above-ground covers, are well marked and most are easily readable. The first burial, that of Florence Blatch, took place in 1959. There are now approximatley 60 visible gravesites, the most recent bearing the date of 1996.
The records shown in this database are the result of a field study conducted by members of the Martin County Genealogical Society's Cemetery Committee and personal interviews with Mrs. Weems, to whom we are indebted for her assistance.
