MCGS Education Project

One of the primary functions of MCGS is to promote Family History research and one of the best ways to accomplish this function is to offer educational and informative instruction. MCGS currently offers classes, workshops, and seminars, many of them presented by MCGS members.

First Saturday Workshops: These workshops are held the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in the MCGS Genealogy Room of the Blake Library. This joint project with Halpatiokee Chapter NSDAR provides free genealogical assistance to anyone needing assistance; membership in MCGS and/or NSDAR is not a prerequisite. No reservations are required; however, you are urged to bring any information (pedigree charts, etc) you may already have on your problem area(s). For more information contact Lloyd Welker (MCGS) at lloyd809@hotmail.com or (772) 334-9451; Arlene L. Brown Ackermann (MCGS) at alafl@comcast.net or (772) 781-4393; or Marion E. Daly (NSDAR) at mdaly61503@aol.com or (772) 283-0722.
Special Workshops: As part of its continuing education program, MCGS is considering bringing back the specialized genealogical workshops each month to be presented Sep to Apr. If you have an interest in helping to bring these workshops back, or perhaps have a suggestion for new or favorite topic(s), please contact Arlene L. Brown Ackermann at alafl@comcast.net or (772) 781-4393 or Walt Bruetsch at waltbruetsch@usa.net or (772) 220-1638.

In cooperation with the LDS Family History Center (FHC) in Palm City, MCGS cosponsors an annual family history fair. This popular event is usually held at the FHC Recreation Room on Mattheson Avenue, Palm City, FL. Attendance is free and open to all. The next fair will be held in Jan 2009. For further information, contact Walt Bruetsch (MCGS) at waltbruetsch@usa.net or (772) 220-1638, alafl@comcast.net or (772) 781-4393, or Don Herzig (LDS) at (772) 398-9329.

MCGS offers computer classes to assist members with their genealogical research and organizational skills. MCGS, in cooperation with the Blake Library and/or the Martin County Community Education Program, also conducts computer classes at novice, intermediate, and advanced levels. If you are interested in computer classes for genealogy or just to begin or advance your computer knowledge, please contact Reba Shepard at rshepfl@bellsouth.net or (772) 288-4606.

Because of declining attendance, the annual trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City sponsored by MCGS has been "suspended" indefinitely. For futher information on future and/or other research trips to Salt Lake City and/or other libraries in and around Martin County and/or the state of FL, contact Arlene L. Brown Ackermann at alafl@comcast.net or (772) 781-4393.
