Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship Committee was authorized by the MCGS Board of Directors in Sep 2002. This authorization was overwhelmingly approved by the MCGS membership at its 20 Sep 2002 monthly meeting. The purpose of the Scholarship Committee is to foster the interest in genealogical research and family history and specifically to encourage participation by high school students by granting an annual award of financial aid towards their higher education.
The scholarship award was established wherein the award amount (currently $500) is given to the high school senior of Martin County, FL whose "paper" submission meets the following criteria:
In the past, although applications have been submitted each year since 2002, awards have only been granted for 2003 and 2005. The committee has just finished reviewing the three submissions for 2006-7 that were recently received. If an award is granted this year, it will be presented to the recipient at their school's award night (usually held in April).
The awards to date have been given to Christopher Balogh (2003-4) Martin County High School and Nathaniel Evans (2005-6) Jensen Beach High School. Their award-winning "papers" can be found in the Genealogy Room at the Blake Library and are located in the MCGS Cabinet. In addition to the monetary award, each recipient also receives a lifetime membership in MCGS.
Applicants should apply for this award through their high school guidance office. For additional information, contact Doug Poulter (772) 286-6385.
Recipients must be high school seniors with proven interest in history, social studies, archaeology, anthropology, or similar subjects. Applicants must submit an original paper (or essay) of between one and three pages, standard font, on a genealogical or family history subject. The paper may include attachments (i.e., pedigree chart or family group sheet). Submissions are to become the property of the donor (MCGS) and may be published (parents of applicants to sign a release).
