OKEECHOBEE - Newton Oliver Stewart, 78, of 701 N, Miami Street, a veteran law enforcement official of the city and the county, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital, West Palm Beach.
A native of Lake County, he came here 43 years ago and had served as chief of police, fire chief and sheriff; in the last post until 1957. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the I. O. O. F.
Surviving are his widow, Lillian, of Okeechobee; five sons, Lester S. of Forrest City, Alton of Dade City, Oliver and Don, both of Okeechobee and Doyle Stewart of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Hostetler and Mrs. Bertha Stairs, both of Tampa; 20 grandchildren.
Services will be today at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard E. Whipple, M. M. Martin and Mickey Evans officiating. Burial will be in Okeechobee Evergreen Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers: Walter D. Saunders, Kenneth Tyson, W. C. Williams, James D. Hill, John Robinson, Harley M. Green, R. C. White and J. E. Cone.
Honorary Pallbearers: Russell Rogers, John W. Collier, Jack Williamson, Henery Parkerson and James Bid Davis.
