"The Gem City on the St. Johns"

An Historical Tour of Turn-of-the-Century Palatka, Florida

Your guide for this turn-of-the-century tour is Meri-lin MacGibbon, a thirteenth generation Floridian, local antiquarian, and avid postcard collector, or deltiologist. Deltiology is the formal term applied to the study of postcards. Postcards contained within this virtual tour are from Mrs. MacGibbon's extensive Floridiana collection.

Historic views from this collection date from the Undivided Back (1901-1907) and Divided Back (1907-1915) Postcard Eras. Most were printed in Europe, especially in Germany whose printing methods were regarded as some of the best in the world. Threats of war and the political strains of the day brought about the end of the Golden Postcard Era.

Throughout the tour, you may click on any post card for a full-size view of the card. Some views contain additional information.
